This 100-acre wildlife habitat is mainly cattail marshes, bog wetlands and some pine forest. Common avian inhabitants include flycatchers, swallows, warblers, Great Blue Heron, Sandpipers and many ducks. Hiking trails are available throughout the area.

Hatchery Park
Hatchery Park offers 1.15 km, 1.9 km and 4 km of groomed loops. All trails connect to the American Birkebeiner Trail, and are lighted from dusk to 10pm. Facilities include parking, a warming building, water fountains and restrooms.

This wildlife area features 2,719-acres of state owned property with a large dam created by Nelson Lake. At the dam, numerous species of birds can be viewed including Red-breasted Nuthatch, Blue-headed Grosbeak and warblers.
